Forward: BIT has developed a mostly non-computerized approach to establishing a system of ingredient control for ingredient lot number and batch tracking. It is not necessarily just for FDA purposes because it really makes sound business sense to manage batching effectively and to embed ingredient tracking in the production processes. |

BIT's Batch and Ingredient Lot Tracking Solution
was originally designed as a quality assurance and batch tracking
system, however with the advent of the Bioterrorism Act only minor
modifications were needed to help food and baking companies of
all sizes meet the FDA's new record keeping requirements of Title
III of the Bioterrorism Act. These FDA regulations are
to insure that in case of contamination or poisoning involving
our food supply the FDA will be able to trace the suspected lot
upstream to the source of the problem and then again downstream
to all affected destinations. With the passing of this new act
the FDA requires that each food plant keep records of which ingredient
lot numbers went into which products, the source of the ingredients
and where the finished products were delivered. The FDA refers
to this one link up and one link down the supply chain as the
immediate previous source, IPS and the immediate subsequent receipt,
ISR. In the case of an investigation the FDA agent will
make all the other connections up and down the entire effected
supply chain but every link in the chain must be able to supply
that information in a matter of hours. |
